“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” ~ Matthew 11:29

Today’s Gospel reading immediately follows Jesus’ reprimand of the cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum. Most of his mighty deeds had been done in these places, and still the people did not turn to Him. Even after witnessing Christ’s miracles, the people refused Him and the Gospel message. They were wise in their own eyes, but not in the ways of God, and so His ways remained hidden to them.

Why didn’t they understand?

How did they have no understanding of God’s ways? Weren’t they following the Ten Commandments or learning from the teachings of the Old Testament prophets? Had they not yet heard the Eight Beatitudes or considered the compassion and authority of Christ?

Jesus goes on to thank God the Father for revealing His love and light to the “the little ones.” These are the ones, the incapable and unimportant, who not only listen to his words but try to live them out each day. The pure of heart, by the virtue of humility, see what the wise of the world cannot.

What are we called to?

Jesus invites us to come to Him. He promises us peace of mind and heart so long as we put on his yoke. His yoke is easy and the burden light, because we carry it with Him.

What does he expect of us and what is in the cart we pull for Him? Truth, virtue, eternal realities. Nothing less than the full Gospel message.

Prayer:

Dear Lord, open my heart. Grant me the willingness to learn and to be led by You.

Call to Action:

We, too, are blinded to God’s miracles and blessings largely because of original and our own personal sin. Original sin is taken care of with one’s baptism, but have you considered making a general confession? (For more information on this, talk with your parish priest.)
