“But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? ” ~ Luke 18:8
A recent article discussing Mass attendance among Catholics noted that current trends show a long-term decline in churchgoing habits. This recent report causes me to wonder, “When the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”
Additionally, when I consider the declining numbers of extended family members who practice the faith, I continue to question whether Jesus will find faith on earth.
Most importantly, as I reflect upon the courage, perseverance, discipline, and commitment necessary to maintain one’s own faith life—throughout all of life’s crises, hurts, losses, and even the process of aging—I hope and pray that when He comes, the Lord will find faith within my own heart.
Life is hard
This past year has been a challenging one – most notably, the unspeakable tragedy at Annunciation school in Minneapolis. In addition, for me, this year included the death of four close friends, two children of friends passed away in tragic accidents, and my own father succumbed to esophageal cancer. Anyone who has lived more than a few years can attest to the fact that life can be difficult. The readings, however, highlight an important point.
We do not have to face life’s challenges alone.
Yes, we must persevere in faith. However, the psalmist reminds us that we can turn to the Lord for help (My help is from the LORD, who made heaven and earth). And Moses reminds us that we can seek the support of others (Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they put a rock in place for him to sit on. Meanwhile, Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other).
When the storms of life descend, and our faith is tested, although we must remain persistent, we do not remain alone. Seek help and trust in the promises of Christ.
Prayer
Lord, be my help. When my energy wanes and my faith is tested, please come to my aid. Be my support, my companion, and my hope throughout all of life.
