WINE - The Upholder of my Life

“Behold, God is my helper;
the Lord is the upholder of my life.
With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
I will give thanks to your name,
O Lord, for it is good” ~ Psalm 54:4,6)

Sometimes, in our lives, we feel we are at our end. Things cannot get worse, we think. Perhaps we believe we are on the verge of something improving, of some relief.

And then it does get worse.

That’s how I felt this past month. With little strength left to swim, I felt like I was finally coming to the surface for air, standing on my tiptoes in the water and pushing myself up. Then, the ground beneath me gave way, and I was sinking again but deeper than before.

“Why, Lord?” I cried.

“Trust Me,” He answered.

King David’s Example

In the Psalms, King David called out to God time after time. When all looked bleak and hopeless, he proclaimed God as His Savior, the One who upholds his life. God would be faithful to the end. Whether he felt God’s presence or not, whether he felt anguish or joy, his God never changed. He remained always the same, always at his side. He would deliver David from the enemy.

From Scripture and history, we know that King David’s faith was not in vain. His prayers were answered. God proved His faithfulness and fulfilled His promises.

He does the same for us.

We see King David repeatedly mentioning the difficulty of his situation and the strength of his enemy and begging God for mercy. We see his faith and praise of God, followed by his response and dedication to continuing to follow the Lord and making sacrifices to Him.

What an example for us!

Our Turn

Often, we are also in situations that appear hopeless. Perhaps we have tried everything we can think of, and the circumstances still get worse. Our enemy may seem too strong or too determined. We are also called to look to God for help, to look to Him for sustenance and strength. “Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life” (Psalm 54:4).

Even when we do not know how things will turn out, we know our God is still good. We can thank Him and praise Him in the difficulty. We can trust Him when we don’t see a way out. Like David, we continue to follow Him when all seems impossible and make sacrifices to Him of ourselves and our struggle. “With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good” (Psalm 54:6).

Even in difficult circumstances, trust, thanksgiving, and praise should be our response to God, for, indeed, He is our Savior. He does uphold our lives, and His promises are true. He is faithful.

Like David, we may not see it now. We don’t see the big picture; only God does. We offer ourselves and our circumstances to Him. We offer our pain and disappointment in trust and surrender, knowing God will take care of us.

Prayer

Even when I feel defeated and beaten down, I know You are faithful. You do not leave me to face my enemy or my circumstances alone. You are always by my side. I praise and thank You for Your love and faithfulness.

Call to Action

Nothing shows trust like praising and thanking God in the difficult moments. The next time you go through something difficult, praise and thank Him for His faithfulness. Surrender to Him, not knowing what He is doing in that situation but knowing He is still working in it.
