“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16
“I don’t think I love my dad.” I confessed to Father Joe as I stared down at the kneeler. “Why did God give me such a challenging father? He makes it hard to love him.” There. I finally said it. The words were hard to admit, but I knew God already knew what was on my heart—a disabled father, difficult to take care of, rude, obnoxious, and outspoken. There had been times I was embarrassed of him. Taking care of him brought out the ugly in me. And now, a year after my mother’s death, I resented the man who refused to let anyone be in charge. How would Father Joe respond to such a heavy confession?
Fr. Joe took a deep breath. “If your dad needed to be taken to the hospital right now, would you? Or would you have someone else do it?”
“Of course I would take him.”
“Then you love him.” His words took me by surprise. “You don’t have to like your father; you don’t even have to like what you’re doing, but your actions choose love. Love isn’t about warm feelings but rather putting your own needs aside for the betterment of another. He is your cross. And the only way to Jesus, is through the Cross.
As I wrapped up my confession, I reflected on his words. How many people did Jesus not like or become annoyed with, but still He loved them? So much did He love us that He would carry His Cross and give up His life for us? Would I do the same? And in that moment, I knew the answer.
Today’s Gospel reminds us of the great love God has for us. Despite our flaws, our behavior, and even our unlikability, He will never stop loving us.
Prayer:
As you go through your day, how can you show love to someone who is hard to love? How can you see them through the eyes of Jesus?
Call to Action:
Dear Lord, help me love just as you loved, even when it’s hard to find. I trust you and know you will show me how to love just as you love me. Amen.
