“This is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day.” ~ John 6:39

Today’s Gospel reading finds Jesus speaking to a hungry crowd. “I am the Bread of Life,” He tells them, “follow me and never be hungry again.” Jesus isn’t just acknowledging humanity’s spiritual hunger, but reminding us of God’s desire. Jesus came to do his Father’s will, and what is His will? That anyone who comes to Him will not be rejected and that no one given to Jesus would be lost but would enjoy eternal life.

A verse that lives in my home

This passage of scripture gives me great hope. Above my dining room table a Latin quote of John 6:39 hangs as a constant reminder that it is God’s desire that not anyone be lost. Our dining area is the center of our home. Our hutch is a blessed home shrine where shining candles and saint statues show up in sync with the liturgical year. This is the place where our family prayed our morning rosary for more than twenty years. It’s the space where meals and conversations are shared; where wine is poured and an occasional champagne cork is popped.

The Sacraments keep us close to Him

God desires that none be lost and has imprinted His name on our souls because we belong to Him. Through baptismal graces this desire is affirmed, our souls are renewed in the sacrament of reconciliation, and Jesus comes to us directly in the Eucharistic feast.

God has prepared us from all eternity, for all eternity. He desires everyone to come to Him. For “this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up at the last day” (John 6:39).

Prayer:

Dear Jesus, may none be lost that you have given me!
