“I tell you, that to every one who has will more be given; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” ~ Luke 19:26
Such a Deal
I offered God a deal.
After I left my day job, I was discerning my next steps. I had this Christian novel I hadn’t sent out for publishing consideration for four years because of work and Catholic nonfiction writing obligations.
I’ll enter this contest, I told God. Nothing will probably happen with it, and I’ll self-publish 50 copies. If you want me to do more of this, please give me a sign. (Yes, sometimes, I try to boss God around. Don’t you?)
A few months later, I learned my manuscript was a semi-finalist and winners would be announced at a big conference. Rather than feeling gratitude and awe, like the wicked servant in today’s Gospel reading, I was fearful. Christian publishers can be leery of Catholic authors. I’m old to take on a fiction-writing ministry. The few people I would know at the conference might be mean to me.
Finally, thanks to some honest friends, I got over myself and went. I didn’t win, but some industry professionals asked for writing samples.
Don’t Hold Back
What happens next doesn’t matter. I was reminded that when we hold back on using our talents—whether they be writing Christian fiction, volunteering at the parish food pantry, being a caregiver, or singing lullabies to the grandkids—we do so at our own peril. Jesus doesn’t promise fame or fortune. He does desire that we recognize our gifts and use them to glorify the Almighty. Don’t be afraid. Be confident in the Lord’s plan, not fearful of the world’s judgment.
Prayer:
Brother Jesus, help me trust in you, not the demons of self-doubt that perch on my shoulders.
Call to Action:
That thing God desires you do with your talent that could mean people would ridicule you? Do it. You’ll find it’s easier than not doing it.

Thank you. Great advice!
Thank you, Melanie. I needed this. I have been in a slump for a while, only pondering some projects instead of digging in. Time to get moving!
