“And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” And he looked up and said, “I see men; but they look like trees, walking.” Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly.” ~ Mark 8:23-25
In today’s brief but powerful scripture passage from Mark, Jesus heals a blind man. He has healed numerous people, but this time there is something different: Jesus heals the blind man in two stages. The man claims to see only moving images after his initial encounter. Jesus goes back a second time, and finally the man is able to see clearly.
Why would Jesus heal this way? He could have restored the man’s sight right away; He did for others. But here, we witness a process—one that mirrors our own spiritual journey.
How often do we find ourselves like the blind man, with only partial vision? We may have encountered Christ, but we still struggle to see clearly. Maybe we’re holding onto doubts, fears, or insecurities. Maybe our understanding of God’s will is blurry. But Jesus is patient. He meets us where we are and continues to work in us, gradually, until we see clearly.
This scripture reminds us that faith is a journey. Conversion is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. We might start with inklings of truth, but through prayer, sacraments, and trust in Christ—our vision clears.
It’s important to note that the blind man doesn’t regain sight on his own. Jesus leads him by the hand, away from the crowd, into deeper intimacy. True healing often happens when we step away from distractions and allow ourselves to be led by Him.
If you’re struggling with confusion or doubt, take heart. Jesus isn’t finished with you. Keep seeking Him, keep trusting, and let Him restore your sight—one step at a time.
Prayer:
Lord, take me by the hand and lead me into deeper trust. Heal my blindness, and help me see You more clearly each day. Amen.
Call to Action:
Take time today to step away from distractions—whether through prayer, Scripture, or silence—and ask Jesus to sharpen your spiritual vision.
