new wine from broken vessels - WINE

“Behold, I make all things new.” ~ Revelation 21:5

When I lost my husband, the world became unrecognizable. Familiar routines—the morning coffee, the sound of keys in the door, even the small arguments over who left the light on—suddenly fell silent. Grief rearranges everything. It takes the vineyard we thought we knew and leaves us standing in fields that feel barren, unsure if anything will ever bloom again.

In those early days, Scripture was both a lifeline and a challenge. “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev 21:5) felt impossible. How could God make anything new when my heart was shattered, when everything I wanted was in the past? And yet, as the weeks and months unfolded, I began to notice the tiniest shoots of life pushing through the soil of grief.

A friend’s unexpected note in the mail. A sunrise that broke through my tears. The gentle kindness of someone simply sitting with me in the silence. These were not grand miracles, but they were seeds. Seeds of God’s promise—that even from brokenness, even from death, new life can take root.

Jesus reminds us, “I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). I’ve clung to that truth. My husband’s death left me feeling cut off, but it was only in pressing deeper into Christ, the true Vine, that I realized I was still connected. The pruning was painful beyond words, but pruning is not abandonment. Pruning is preparation for fruit.

And slowly, I’ve seen how grief itself can become a vineyard. Not the one I would have chosen, but the one entrusted to me. In that vineyard, sorrow and hope intertwine. Tears water the soil, and God Himself tends the tender shoots of faith, resilience, and compassion.

My friends remind me I’m not called to tend this vineyard alone. As women, as sisters in Christ, we stand shoulder to shoulder, each bearing witness that loss does not have the final word. Love does. Resurrection does. Christ does.

I may not yet see the fullness of the new wine God is pressing from this broken vessel, but I trust His promise: He makes all things new. Even this.

Prayer:

Lord Jesus, You are the Vine and I am one of Your branches. In my sorrow and loss, help me to remain rooted in You. Where I feel barren, bring forth fruit. Where I feel broken, pour out new wine. Thank You for never abandoning me, even in grief. Amen.

Call to Action:

Today, look for one small “shoot of life” God may be growing in your vineyard—a kind word, a moment of beauty, an unexpected grace. Thank Him for it, and let it remind you that He is still making all things new.
