The Holy Trinity - WINE

“Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live? Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great terrors, according to all that the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?” ~ Deuteronomy 4:33-34

Mystery of God

I once heard a brief homily about the Trinity. The priest said carefully, solemnly, “The Trinity was a great Mystery revealed to us. It still is.” And he sat down. He sat there for quite a while before getting up and continuing the Mass. Stunned, we waited silently, perhaps considering for the first time in a long time how eternal God is, how mysterious, and how Three Persons are One LORD. Today’s readings reveal this central mystery of our Faith again.

Startling Realization

Moses in Deuteronomy 4:32-33Was it ever heard of…. a people hear the voice of God … and live When you consider that you didn’t cause yourself to exist, gratitude to Mom and Dad rises up in your heart. But for them, you (nor I) wouldn’t be here. Now, consider where you sit…. at Mass! But for the revelation of God to us, we would not know God, nor know the strong hand and outstretched arm, and … great terrors, all of which the LORD, your God, did before your very eyes. Our life’s narrow escapes, our plenitude of family, friends, resources, education, et cetera, et cetera – fix in your heart, that the LORD is God, in the heavens above [the invisible world] and on earth below, and that there is no other

There is no other God. Ponder that for a moment. No person, no career, no amount of money, nothing can replace in our lives the Trinity of Persons who love us. Neither can we add one minute to our lives. But the Trinity is Eternal, timeless.

Embracing Relationship with God

It hit me as I sat in that pew, waiting for whatever the celebrant priest might do after those two sentences. I’ll never understand the Trinity. Yet, I can have a relationship with all Three Persons. Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. I sit in a Catholic Church at Mass celebrating the Trinity choosing me to live in relationship with a Loving Father, a Redeeming Son, a Holy Spirit, who wants me to cry out Abba, Father.  I have been adopted into Christ Jesus to be a disciple of the Lord, of the Trinity, and so have you! The mysterious Trinitarian Love of God reveals itself to you in His gift of Faith in the Trinity. This Love wants to be with you always, even to the end of the age and into eternity. The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity is something to celebrate!

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the Beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end, Amen.
