“This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you,
that God is light and in him there is no darkness at all.”
~ 1 John 1:5
O Holy Night is my favorite Christmas song. The lyrics set to this beautiful tune cause my imagination to soar, the eyes of my heart to focus on our Lord, and my spirit to be overcome with joy.
I picture a dark, quiet night, suddenly illuminated by a radiant glow on the horizon. A powerful gush of wind causes the shepherds in the field to stop immediately and look into the darkness as they feel the weight of the air descend upon them. Even the animals have sensed a change – nothing is as it was.
From the Beginning
Long has the world lived in darkness, yet even from the beginning, the Word was with us.
Watching and waiting; until at last – a thrill of hope – He became flesh to dwell among us. Have we seen this great light in our lives? Have we left rejoicing and glorifying the Lord? For nothing is as it was.
Long Live the King
That radiant light gives me hope for tomorrow when a new and glorious morn will dawn upon us. So let us continue to fall on our knees moment by moment, glorifying God for His light, shining in the darkness, that will never be overcome.
Today, as the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Innocents, may we fall on our knees in prayer and surrender, remembering that God is light, a luminous beacon of hope for us, even when it may seem that all hope is lost.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, bestow on me the grace to be overcome with the love of the Christ Child, that my soul may feel its worth. Remind me to praise you in times of joy and sorrow so that I may walk forever with You in the light.
Call to Action
Spend some time with the Lord today, perhaps even light a votive candle at church, and be reminded of the power of the Light. Call to mind the sacredness of every human life, pray and fast in honor of all those little lives lost too soon and those in danger.
