Jesus said to his disciples:
“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.
But when he comes, the Spirit of truth,
he will guide you to all truth. ~ John 16:12
Come Holy Spirit
It’s hard not to notice the religious artwork and statues when you walk into my house. Each item has its own story about how it was acquired. Some we purchased. Some we inherited. As we changed our living room into a prayer space during the pandemic, I realized that I had no image or picture of the Holy Spirit. Come Holy Spirit, Come.
Shortly after this realization, a neighbor who had recently moved next door brought me a present. “I thought of you when I saw this,” she said. That was odd; I thought, because I didn’t think she really knew me; we had just met. Can you guess what it was? It was a pewter metal dove called the Dove of Peace which now hangs in a prominent spot.
I have much more to tell you,
In today’s Gospel, Jesus wants to share with us all the good news, but he knows that we won’t be able to understand it on our own. We will need spiritual guidance that only the Advocate or Spirit of truth can provide. It might take many times of hearing a Gospel story before we understand its meaning. Quiet time to read and re-read scripture helps.
But you cannot bear it now.
Before you begin to pray with Scripture, ask the Holy Spirit to be with you, in your heart, illuminating the message you are to receive.
Prayer
Let us Pray, Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And You shall renew the face of the earth.
O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.
Call to Action
Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in sharing, in some way, the Good News with at least one other person today.
