Three days after Easter and I’ve secretly raided each of my kids’ Easter baskets at least five times a day (my will power crumbles at the sight of Reese’s peanut butter eggs). I am also eating up today’s Gospel (Luke 24:13-35), which is most famously known for the account of two of Jesus’ disciples walking with Jesus on the road to Emmaus.
As epic as this familiar story is, while re-reading it, I was more struck by what the two were sharing with Jesus on this journey. Since the two travelers had yet to recognize they were speaking with Jesus, they recounted to him all that had happened in the last few days. Jesus’ body placed in the tomb after his death had since disappeared.
“Some women from our group, however, have astounded us: they were at the tomb early in the morning and did not find his Body; they came back and reported that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who announced that he was alive” (Luke 24:22-23).
Jesus Walks with Us
The slow unfolding and ultimate discovery of Who traveled and dined with them—amused me. However, the disciples’ astonishment by what the group of women had discovered, along with the magnitude of what Jesus revealed to them, profoundly moved me.
I love that such a powerful experience was shared together by a group of women. My own heart has been touched by experiencing Jesus with other women around me, sharing that bond of amazement at the Lord’s movement in our lives, his unimaginable forgiveness, and his merciful healing. Ladies, we are better when we walk with each other on our journeys with Christ, when we support one another and lift each other up. God gives us an incredible gift in the presence of our fellow sisters in Christ.
Seeking Sisterhood
I encourage you today to seek out that support system of women striving in their faith. Maybe it’s joining an existing church group or Bible study, or perhaps you’re the one God is calling to start a spiritual book club or mom’s group. The possibilities are endless and rewarding! I’m praying for each of you reading this, that you may always be surrounded by women who will love on you and be a constant reminder of Christ in your life!
