Lent grants us a calling to fast. My initial inclination is to think about food, dessert, coffee, wine. But when I enter into prayer, I feel a tug to expand the possibilities.

Our culture fills all moments with noise. We are so connected, and the voices can leave little room for God. These voices can include social media, tv, the radio, colleagues, family, friends, and even ourselves.

Some of the voices can be the work of the Holy Spirit, life-giving, challenging, and affirming. But far too often, we allow a self-deprecating, comparison, and condemning lies to hold us. But even more so, we fail to allow God space and time to speak.

This Lent, consider who you turn to for truth, whose opinion do you seek first. What media, books, people are you listening to? Take time this Lent to fast from the negative, or just extra background noise. “Be still and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:11)

Lord, help me to turn to you, to hear your love, your truth. Please help me to resist constant movement and sit with you. I surrender it all to you. Protect me from the evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.
