However, take care and be earnestly on your guard not to forget the things which your own eyes have seen, nor let them slip from your memory as long as you live, but teach them to your children, and to your children’s children. Deuteronomy 4:9
Children watch their parents. A few months ago, I realized how true this is.
On that Saturday afternoon, I attended a fund raiser directed by my daughter, Christina. Much to my surprise, my twenty five year old daughter had organized everything; the food, a silent auction, and appearances by local celebrities.
After Christina gave a speech, I pulled her aside. “Where did you learn how to do all this?” I asked.
She laughed.
“Mom, Don’t you remember when you were a director of faith formation? Every Sunday morning, you gave me jobs to do. I learned all this from you!”
I was genuinely surprised. Unbeknownst to me, those Sunday mornings had shaped Christina’s faith and molded her into a leader.
“I’m so proud of you.” I told her.
If you are raising or working with children, invite them to use their gifts. Teach them the scriptures, take them to mass, and talk to them about their faith.
As the years pass, they will watch and listen.
In time, they will become all that God intended them to be.
